Menurut penduduk tertua, Ahmad Abas, 112, nama itu diambil sempena peristiwa seekor gajah pengangkut barang yang terjatuh di tepi sungai di Kampung Changhai pada zaman dahulu. Meskipun dahulunya sebuah kawasan terpinggir yang pernah dicengkam ancaman komunis dan perintah berkurung, sejarah unik ini kekal menjadi identiti bandar yang terletak kira-kira 42 kilometer dari Alor Setar ini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kini, Changlun telah berubah wajah daripada sebuah perkampungan sunyi kepada bandar yang pesat membangun, terutama selepas pembinaan Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan (PLUS) pada tahun 1980-an. Transformasi &#8220;hutan belantara ke hutan batu&#8221; ini semakin rancak dengan kewujudan pelbagai institusi pengajian tinggi dan kawasan perindustrian yang melonjakkan nilai hartanah setempat.
